HELLO, DOLLY! is the story of Mrs. Dolly Levi's efforts to marry Horace Vandergelder, the well-known half-a-millionaire, and send his money circulating among the people like rainwater, the way her late husband, Ephraim Levi, taught her. Along the way she also succeeds in matching up three other young couples. An ebullient and irresistible story of the joy of living, glittering with happy songs and light comedy, it is sure to provide an entertaining evening out for the entire family.
Which song unseated the Beatles from their No. 1 position in 1964? The title song of Hello Dolly! by Louis Armstrong.
The Broadway musical Hello Dolly!, with lyrics and music by Jerry Herman, won an unprecedented 10 Tony Awards, a record which it held for 38 years. Its movie version in 1969, starring Barbra Streisand, won 3 Oscars, including Best Music.
For the knowledgable theatre-goer, it will be interesting to note that Hello Dolly! is based on the Thornton Wilder classic The Matchmaker. Wilder is a much respected, three-time Pulitzer prize winner for plays Our Town, The Skin of our Teeth and a novel The Bridge on San Luis Rey.
Translation, Lyrics, Direction : Ravi Raj Sagar
Ravi Raj Sagars other plays for Dramatech include hindi versions of Agatha Christiess Ten Little Niggers, A Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes stories, Christies Witness for the Prosecution, and Kesselrings Arsenic and Old Lace. The last two were chosen among Best Plays of the Year by Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi.
