An unemployed youth dreams of living well. One evening, he finds a drunken industrialist passed out in a gutter, and takes the opportunity to switch places with him. He finds love, intrigue, and the good life in his new home, Pushpak, a hotel where the industrialist was booked in. A silent masterpiece.
21st August : Sagara Sangamam (Telugu/160mins) Dir. K. Viswanath
Balakrishna (Kamal) is a poor, talented dancer. His dream is to perform at an All-India level competition. Madhavi (Jayaprada), a rich girl notices his talent and helps in getting him an opportunity to perform in an all-India competition. As he is all set to realise his dream, his ageing mother passes away. Slowly, he gets closer to Madhavi, and discovers her past.

This cross-culture romance between a southern Vaasu and a northern Sapna epitomizes inter-caste and inter-state romance. It plays out their tragic story, who fall in love but are kept apart by the huge abyss of the prejudices of caste and language that their parents seem to hold dearer than the happiness of their children.

Kamal is an activist opposed to capitalism in all its forms. He is also the beloved of the villain's daughter (Kiran). Daddy is out to foil the romance. Kamal meets with an accident, loses his leg and his face disfigured. He goes to Bhubaneswar to pick up a cheque for the workers whose cause he espouses. On his flight back to Chennai, he clashes with a co-passenger (Madhavan) over their differing ideologies. He also learns that Madhavan is headed for Chennai to get married to the villain's daughter.
26th August : Nayagan (Tamil/202mins & Hindi/199mins) Dir. Kamal Haasan
The film begins with a young Velu running away to Bombay after killing a police officer who betrayed him. He is taken in by a Tamil boy whose father is a smuggler. As a young man, his intrusion into his father's job gets his father killed. He searches out the policeman reponsible and bludgeons him to death.

Hey Ram (Tamil/2000/202mins) Dir. Kamal Haasan
Saket Ram, an 89-year-old South Indian Brahmin is dying. The film flashbacks to the 1940s, when he and his good friend used to work in Karachi. Relations are pleasant between the Indians and the English, and Saket and Amjad do not approve of Partition and the creation of Pakistan. Saket is required to go to Calcutta and in his absence, Aparna Ram, his simple Bengali wife is brutally raped and murdered by Muslims. Unable to cope with this tragic loss, he kills those Muslims in a fit of rage.
